The Maine Coon Interest Group(SA) was formed in April 1996, to promote the awareness of the breed, to encourage sound breeding programmes and to provide information on Maine Coons. The group is formally affiliated with SACC, but members participate in both SACC and Cat Federation shows. The group publishes newsletters regularly and does exhibitions to promote the breed.

Breeders who are members of the MCIG-SA are required to sign a code of ethics, and will provide Agreements of Sale to all buyers.

The committee is chosen yearly at the MCIG-SA AGM.
