A family in Boksburg were
giving kittens away. We took a little male 15 months ago and called him
Binki. We love the charming cat so much and didn’t know he would grow into
such an unusual looking animal (and so big!). Being curious about him, we
began to search for pictures of similar types of cats on the web, only to
find that he may be a Maine Coon!
At the moment our
“Cat-Dog” weighs 5.7kg and measures approximately 63cm from the top of the
“M” to the base of his plumey tail. If he still has to grow I will have to
get a house and some land! We have to brush him down often (especially
summer) otherwise there is enough fluff to make some kittens which lands up
on the carpet and he chunks up furballs every few weeks.
He is playful, makes a
“mrrrrroooaaw” type of noise I have never heard from a cat before (like
talking?) and “calls” me when I am not around. He follows me around and
prefers to sleep at my feet. He wakes me up before the alarm at 05:00 every
morning (Mon – Sun regrettably), and knows when my eyes are open despite us
locking him out the bedroom (he is too big for the bed and too naughty), and
calls me from outside the door.
He will only drink water
from a dripping tap (which is quite annoying) and “buries” any water we put
down for him (like burying his business) – no matter how fresh. He might
take a few sips from our glasses if we leave it around. He is very fussy
about what goes in his mouth. No rubbish for him. Only Purina One,
Whiskers, Tuna and Woolies Chicken without skin (but just the back section
from the middle and we have to let it cool or we must go to hell). Believe
me, we have tried EVERYTHING! He either throws up or starves! He also
recognizes a tin of tuna ON SITE! Often when he eats the tuna, to get the
last bits – he scoops them with his paw.
Its very difficult to be
away from him for periods of time because he “pines” for me and the
neighbours complain that it sounds almost like a dog whining more than a
cat! When he gets hot he sleeps on his back. He also sits back. The
picture of this is not great (phone camera – but I had to be quick). If I
am away longer than I should be from home, even if there is someone else, he
“punishes” me by “looking” directly at me and hooking my curtains. At first
I thought my cat was evil! But then I began to realize that this is Binki’s
emotional outlet… very funny, but true.
